When people find out water softeners use salt, the first question is usually: "Does that mean my water tastes salty?"
It doesn't. And the salt never actually enters your water supply.
Here's what's really going on — explained simply, without the chemistry degree.
First, Why Does Water Need Softening?
Hard water contains high levels of calcium and magnesium — minerals that get absorbed as rainwater passes through rock and soil before reaching your tap.
These minerals are harmless to drink, but they cause problems you'll recognise:
- Dry, tight skin after a shower
- Dull, brittle hair
- Soap that won't lather properly
- Limescale on shower heads, taps, and kettles
Softening water means removing those calcium and magnesium ions. That's where salt comes in.
The Ion Exchange Process
Inside every water softener is a chamber filled with thousands of tiny resin beads. These beads are negatively charged, which means they naturally attract positively charged minerals — specifically the calcium and magnesium ions in hard water.
When hard water flows through:
Step 1: Calcium and magnesium ions in the water are drawn to the resin beads and bind to them.
Step 2: The water that flows out has had those hardness minerals removed — it's now soft.
Step 3: Over time, the resin beads become fully loaded with calcium and magnesium and can no longer attract any more. This is when regeneration is needed.
Think of the resin beads like a magnet. They pull the hardness minerals out of the water and hold onto them — until they're full.
So Where Does the Salt Come In?
Salt is not part of the softening process itself. It's used exclusively during regeneration — the process of resetting the resin beads so they can work again.
When the resin is saturated with calcium and magnesium, the softener flushes it with a highly concentrated saltwater solution (called brine). The sheer volume of sodium ions in the brine overwhelms the resin — there are simply so many of them that they displace the calcium and magnesium ions and take their place on the beads.
The calcium and magnesium are washed away down the drain. The resin is now loaded with sodium ions and ready to attract hardness minerals again.
This is why a small trace of sodium may end up in softened water — not because sodium was there at the start, but because it's left behind after regeneration.
The sodium that ends up in softened water is minimal — far less than a slice of bread. It's not noticeable in taste and is not a health concern for most people.
Salt is not a cleaning agent or a flavouring — it's a recharging agent. It resets the resin so the softener can keep working.
How Often Does This Happen?
That depends on the type of softener:
- Whole-house softeners (like Harvey Water Softeners and Kinetico) regenerate automatically, usually overnight. You top up the salt tank every few weeks.
